What I hoped would happen
What my friends thought would happen
What really happened
I did a 1 day event organized by the Ottawa Motorsport Club using a track constructed in a giant parking lot. Thanks to our weird weather here recently (it was -25C all day today) the track was pretty rutted but had some extremely slick glare ice that made for an interesting playground.
Driving my FWD Golf, it was interesting to learn how applying gas can get you out of some sticky situations. I was also fascinated at how proper winter tires can provide grip in basically any situation, even the previously mentioned ice. It’s not a lot, but in our collision avoidance maneuvers, it provided enough to work with the ABS to get out of trouble.
It was a fun way to spend a few hours in the car. If you have any apprehension about winter driving, I wholeheartedly encourage you to look around locally to find a similar group and get out there for some fun.

Since it’s February, I’m going to say it’s like that all year long? Now that’s something I could get used to.
